California History Day

Spring 2026 Date: April 17th

Join us as we learn about the chores, crafts, and fun that made up life on the frontier. Trained docents will lead tours in some historic buildings and educational hands on stations that focus on westward expansion. This tour has been specifically designed to support the 4th and 5th grade student’s learning. However, the education provided on this day can cross over to other grade standards. No minimum or maximum participants required.

Native American Life

Guided Two-Part Tour. Lecture and Hands On Acorn Gringing, The Native American Life lecture presents artifacts of the Yokuts along with an acorn grinding utilizing real heavy artifacts for a hands-on experience. 3rd Grade and Older. Maximum 75. Larger groups will need to split up into two different days.

Home Tours

Tour inside three prominent historical family homes. The beautiful two-story Victorian style 1891 Howell House, the early 1900’s, Lopez family and Hill family house, and the Metcalf House. Get an up close and personal tour of their history and lifestyle lead by a trained docent. Not conducted during summer. Maximum: 36

Norris School

A costumed docent will take you on a journey back to the 1880s. An hour of “class time” in the historic Norris School provides an opportunity for your group to learn about the lessons, customs, and manners of the 1880s. Not conducted during summer. Maximum: 52

Lori Brock Discovery Center

Perfect for the “Littles” to play and explore. Children can pull out drawers and open up tabletops to create while using their imagination. This self-guided touir features discovery of science through hands-on play. TK through 2nd Grade. Maximum is 52. Larger groups may need to be split into separate days.

Pioneer Village

Explore on your own or with docent over 50 structures on 16 acres of Kern County History. Transport yourself back in time and stroll amongst the buildings of Dentists, Bankers, Carriage Makers, and many more. Interested to learn more? Add a docent tour. All ages welcome. Minimum is 20, maximum 50.
